How To Maintain Your Window’s Tracks
The window track is the area of the window that is, hands down one of the the hardest aspects of window cleaning to clean. This area gets very dirty, very easily and very quickly. Keep an eye on this area especially in winter due to damp and condensation. Once cleaned you should keep maintaining the tracks at least once a month or once every 3 months at the most. This will make a big difference in keeping your home clean as well as reducing allergens in your home.
A steam cleaner is #1 for cleaning window tracks, but most of us do not own one so here is another way.
What You Will Need
- Q-Tips &/or old toothbrush
- Warm water
- Vinegar or Disinfectant with a degreasing agent. (The best cleaner that I have discovered is LA’s Awesome All purpose Cleaner – a USA made cleaner found at $2 stores)
- Paper towels
- A Vacuum
How Often Should Window Tracks be Cleaned?
It is recommended to clean the tracks of your window every month to every 3mths depending on the home. During a professional Busy Bee window clean, this area will also be deep cleaned.
How to Clean Your Window Track
Usually there is a heavy amount of black dirt, dead bugs, and small leaves caught in the track. Start by vacuuming the large debris, it may help if you use a hand brush/broom to flick the dirt loose first. Do not wet any track prior to starting otherwise you will make the job 10X harder.
Vinegar naturally kills bacteria and can be used as a pet-friendly, child-safe way to clean window tracks if you prefer not to use chemicals. Next, use vinegar and paper towels to clean the larger areas. Once you have wiped up most of the visible dirt, use q-tips dipped in vinegar to get the smaller, harder to reach areas. After you have completely rid the track of any visible dirt or condensation, wipe the area with warm water and a paper towel. This will help reduce the scent of any remaining vinegar and any remaining dirt. It is time consuming but once if is done and you maintain with a quick wipe every month you will keep on top of it.
When you clean your window tracks it is also advised to wipe down your security/fly screens with warm water and a cloth to help keep the window tracks cleaner, longer if you have any.
